Meet My Trustees

Butler Rural Electric Cooperative’s service territory is divided into nine districts, each represented by a democratically elected trustee. Board members are elected by cooperative members for three-year terms. Voting takes place online and by mail before the cooperative's annual meeting in April.

David Evans, President

District 1
Oxford and Reily townships

A resident of Oxford township, David Evans has been a cooperative member since 1997 and has served as a board member since 2005. Dave is the current board president and has also served as secretary and treasurer in the past. One of the many ways he has shown dedication to the board and its cooperative members is by earning the credentialed cooperative director, board leadership, and director gold certifications through NRECA. When David isn’t in the boardroom or managing his family’s business, Art Evans & Sons, Inc., he enjoys spending time with his wife, Dawn, and their children and grandchildren. When time allows, he enjoys escaping for a little 4 wheeling and camping with family and friends.

Jim Meador, Vice President

Milford Township

Jim Meador lives in Milford Township and has been a member of the cooperative since 1978. He has served on the board of trustees since 2006 and became the vice president in 2024. Jim has earned the Credentialed Cooperative Director, Board Leadership, and Director Gold certification through the NRECA. Jim retired from Miami University after 30 years of working at the power plant. He has been on the Milford Township Fire Department for 45 years and served as assistant chief for over 20 years. He has also been a board member for the Miami University Credit Union for 25 years. Jim and his wife, Karen, have three children and five grandchildren. In his free time, Jim enjoys reading, traveling, history, and spending time with grandchildren.

Michael Tilton, Secretary & Treasurer

Hanover and St. Clair townships

Michael Tilton is a resident of Hanover Township and has been a cooperative member since 1992. He has been a board member since 2003 and has received his Credentialed Cooperative Director and Board Leadership certification through NRECA. He served on NRECA’s advisory committee from 2015 to 2018. Michael is retired from his position as Chief Deputy at the Butler County Auditor’s Office. He was a board member for the Farm Bureau for 10 years, served on the Butler County Law Library resources board for 14 years, and has been a Special Deputy for Butler County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol since 1994. Michael and his wife, Teresa, have three children.

Thomas McQuiston

District 3
Israel and Somers townships

Tom McQuiston is a resident of Somers Township. He has been a member of the cooperative since 1971 and a board member since 1980. He was president of the board for 34 years. Tom is a self-employed farmer, has served as president on the Preble County Farm Bureau's board, was a board member of the Landmark/Harvest Land cooperative, and was a two-term Preble County Commissioner. Tom is a member of the Farm Bureau Advisory Council. He served on NRECA’s Board of Directors for 14 years and currently serves on Ohio’s Rural Electric Cooperatives’ Board of Directors. He and his wife, Karen, have three children and seven grandchildren. His hobbies include watching movies, playing cards, and farm toys.

Jay Hasbrook

District 4
German and Gratis townships

Jay Hasbrook is a resident of Gratis Township. He has been a member of the cooperative since 1998 and a board member since 2020. He has received the Credentialed Cooperative Director, Board Leadership, and Director Gold certification through NRECA. Jay holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wright State University with a major in finance and a minor in accounting. He also graduated magna cum laude with a Juris Doctor degree from Salmon P. Chase College of Law and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1993. He is retired after 30 years at General Motors, retired from the U.S. government as a civil service employee in the Department of Defense for over 10 years which included 19 months in Iraq and 6 months in Afghanistan. He also retired from the military with 4 years service in the Army and 22 years in the Navy and Navy Reserve. Jay served 10 years on the Preble County Planning Board. He is an active life member in the Veteran of Foreign Wars and AM Vets and is also a member of the American Legion. He has two daughters and a son and has recently remarried. In his free time, he enjoys restoring tractors and older pickup trucks.

Vickie Jo Barger

District 5
Madison and Wayne townships

Vickie lives in Wayne Township in Butler County and graduated from Fairfield High School. She received a Master of Business Administration degree with a major in finance from Miami University in 2003. During this time, she was the recipient of the Financial Executives International academic honors award.

Vickie began serving as the Finance Director for the Butler County Sheriff's Office in July 2006. Her responsibilities encompass all financial and budgetary matters for the Sheriff's Office. Prior to joining the Sheriff's Office, she served as Finance Director for the City of Monroe and the Budget Analyst for Miami University. She was also an adjunct instructor for the Miami University School of Business.

Vickie is a board member and treasurer for the AllWeath Federal Credit Union. She is a member of the National and Ohio Association of Public Treasurers and the National, Ohio, and local chapters of the Greater Finance Officer's Associations. She is a past president for the Greater Cincinnati Finance Officers' Association.

Vickie is married to Matt Barger and they have five children and five grandchildren. In her free time she enjoys spending time with family, watching sports, and going to the theater.

Steve Grote

District 6
Morgan Township

Steve is a business development manager at Solenis, a specialty chemical company. He has a bachelor of science degree from Miami University in paper science and engineering and an associates degree in mechanical engineering technology. Steve is a past member of the Ross and Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department with over 20 years of service between both and is a past member of the Morgan Township Board of Zoning Appeals. Steve is married to his wife, Amy, and has five children and three grandchildren. Steve enjoys spending his free time on the lake, exploring the mountains of West Virginia on his side by side, and attending cattle and hog shows at the county fairs.

John Broering Sr.

District 8
Colerain, Crosby, and Harrison townships

John has over 40 years in the manufacturing sector. He receive a chemical engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati and a mechanical engineering degree from Miami University. John has been a Butler Rural Electric Cooperative member for over 40 years and is a member of the Harrison High School STEM program advisory board. He is also a regular blood donor and assists with youth sports activities. John has six adult children and nine grandchildren. During his free time, John enjoys taking care of his home, spending time with family, and traveling.

Scott Lessing

District 9
Fairfield and Ross townships

Scott Lessing has been a resident of Ross Township for 36 years. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Science from Miami University, graduating with honors cum laude and as the most outstanding engineering technology student.

Scott retired from Miami University after 20 years as the manager of their electric utility system, which included transmission, distribution, and generation. He also worked for 14 years at the City of Hamilton Municipal Electric as a utility engineer designing industrial, commercial and residential electric utility facilities.

Scott has served for over 20 years on the Miami University Engineering Technology Industry Advisory Council. He has credit for 166 blood and platelet contributions over 30 years. He has been a member of Hamilton Christian Center for 46 years, serving in music and missions and has served on the Elder Council for 34 years. Scott and his wife, Marilyn, have three children and ten grandchildren. He stays busy watching his grandkids' sports, doing repairs and projects for family and friends, and watching movies.
